Setting Personal Weather and Temperature Preferences For a Generation-1 family just starting out, it may be best to avoid buying a thermostat entirely, but depending on how many people you have working (and what story you want to tell in your game), your mileage may vary. Poor Sims may not easily afford being overly comfortable however. Even the poorest Sims should be able to afford their bills if they're working, and the bill savings aren't worth the serious debuffs associated with being too hot. In general, if your Sims are poor and even if you're playing without Cheats, it's unlikely to be worth the discomfort of saving money. Conversely, if you choose "Colder" during summer or "Warmer" during winter, your bills will go up but your Sims will draw buffs due to being more comfortable. If you set the thermostat to "Warmer" or during summer or "Colder" during winter, it will significantly reduce the cost of your family's bills, though your Sims will likely draw stronger debuffs. Note that this affects more than simply your Sims' comfort. Children seem to be less susceptible to extreme weather, while Elders seem to be more susceptible. You can override any Sim's clothing choice with a self-interaction, but overheating a Sim (by dressing them in their cold-weather outfit during a heatwave for example) or freezing a Sim can result in serious debuffs, up to and including death. If your Sim is indoors, they'll survive in extreme temperatures as long as they're in any of their "normal" outfits, including swimwear or sleepwear. Luckily, Sims have a good self-preservation instinct and will automatically change into either hot- or cold-weather outfit when necessary. As with other outfits, Sims can have multiple outfits in either category if you choose, but at least one in each is required.Įxtreme temperatures will draw a moodlet debuff, but often the debuff is canceled if the Sim is dressed appropriately. These can be changed through Create A Sim either while making a family for the first time or through interaction with a dresser in the game. With the introduction of the Seasons Expansion Pack, Sims all gain two additional outfits: Hot-Weather Outfit and Cold-Weather Outfit. On particularly hot or cold days, ignoring warning signs can be lethal. While precipitation can be generally ignored if Sims have things they need to do, temperature must be greatly respected. The current weather and temperature are displayed at the bottom-center of the screen next to the in-game clock. This may be offset from Traits, such as the Loves the Outdoors or Childish trait, and you can still give orders like "Play in the Rain" to a Sim who has automatically run inside. Having a Sim stay outdoors during any inclement weather generally results in the Sim drawing a moodlet debuff, making them less happy, although Children tend not to mind as much. Most Sims regard precipitation as a negative. Note that settings apply to an entire save file, but a given neighborhood's climate will impact your available weather. This will prevent any harm coming to them directly from temperatures. By default, the weather is at its most powerful, so you'll see thunderstorms and blizzards during the appropriate Seasons.įrom that screen you can also disable temperature effects on your Sims. There, you can use drop-down boxes to customize the upper limit of weather in the neighborhood, including during off rain or snow (or both) completely. Once you load a save file, enter the pause menu, then go to Game Options, and finally to Seasons.
